On New Years Day night, the owner of our hotel in Kalaw ran us into town to a tiny bar (Hi Snack & Drink) on his motorbike ( one at a time!) to be caroused by a friendly bar-full of guitar strumming and singing locals somewhat worse for wear- Johnnie Walker being the preferred tipple in these parts.
The next morning we were off with a cheery wave from the staff at the Green Haven hotel by 7 hr bus journey back to Bagan.
From the bus stop in Bagan we took a pony express to the hotel
By 6 am the next morning we were on the boat to Mandalay- a large river boat with a capacity of a few hundred, but only carrying about 8 fare paying passengers in this occasion - certainly more crew than passengers on board.
The journey took 13 hrs so we were able to witness both the sunrise and sunset from the boat and really enjoyed the trip.
Sunrise on the Irrawaddy
Sunset on the Irrawaddy.
The river gets a bit shallow and now and then the crew have to take the depth at the bow with poles to guide the boat forward- we only scrapped the bottom a few times (must get some for Hilda May!)
We also occasional stuck the bow into the bank in the middle of nowhere and lowered a plank for a local to get on or off
From the dock at Mandalay it was another motorbike taxi to the Tiger hotel.
The next day we had a great day out in Pyin Oo Lwyn ( see next blog), and today we got an early morning taxi to Mandalay airport to fly to Bangkok on our way to Vietnam.
Location:Mandalay
