Vietnam -first impressions

Confucius he say "Don't go to Hanoi in January without sweater-many brass monkeys".
For the last 8 weeks we've only seen blue skies and sunshine, but alas Hanoi is cloudy and about 12 deg C.- bit of a shock.
However, we are having a great time nontheless. Hanoi is very vibrant, and teaming with motorbikes everywhere.

We're staying in the old town in a really nice hotel and can walk everywhere, although we do risk being run over by motorbikes with just about every step.
Yesterday we went to a traditional water puppet show

And today saw a traditional Tuong theatre production- feels like we could be at the Brighton festival.

Also dropped in at the 'Hanoi Hilton '- the old French colonial prison where the captured US pilots were held.

There's still a reminder of French colonial rule

We also called in at the Temple of Literature- a university built in the 11 century in honour of Confucius,

and listened to some traditional music including a lady playing something that looked like a knitting machine.

Food is great, but there's not much they don't eat here - we saw a box of live frogs in the market yesterday. Coincidentally we haven't seen a stray dog around yet!!
We're off on an overnight boat trip to break the ice at Ha Long Bay tomorrow.

Location:Hanoi, Vietnam

  1. Sorry, but we did say the north was bleak and boring - however, you don't seem to have found it that boring.
